When is an auction better than an estate sale?

When the value is concentrated in a handful of pieces rather than spread across a whole house. Art, jewelry, firearms, coins, mid-century furniture, and antiques reach a national pool of bidders at auction and are routinely underpriced at a weekend sale in the driveway.

What does an appraisal cost, and do I need one?

Appraisers usually charge hourly or a flat fee per report, and a written appraisal is what a probate court, an insurer, or the IRS will ask for. You need one if the estate is being divided among heirs, is being filed with the court, or holds an item you suspect is worth more than a few thousand dollars.

Should the same company appraise and sell my items?

Be careful with that. An appraiser who also wants to buy or sell the piece has an interest in the number they write down. For anything significant, pay an independent appraiser who does not take a commission on the sale.

How long does it take to get paid after an auction?

Typically 30 to 45 days after the sale closes, once buyers have paid and the lots have shipped. The consignment agreement will name the exact timing along with the seller commission and any photography, storage, or unsold-lot fees.
